Explorers’ garden, travelling around the world.
Rue de la Porte
29200 Brest
When it comes to gardens, history also has pride of place on the right bank, in the legendary district of Recouvrance, at the Jardins des Explorateurs (Explorers’ garden). Overlooking the River and the harbour, with a marvellous view of both these and the castle, it is complimentary to both sites.

On the one side, the Batterie du Cavalier, designed by Filley in 1766 to strengthen the harbour's military defences below, and on the other side, in the upper section, the old Gendarmerie Maritime gardens, redesigned as a green walk.
In the shelter of the Batterie, this garden demonstrates the important contributions made by Brest to maritime expeditions of the 18th century. It shelters a collection of plants brought back by four explorers who left Brest: Louis Antoine de Bougainville, Jacques Julien Houton de la Billardière, Etienne Raoul, Phillibert Commerson. They are divided into five geographic areas: Asia, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and South America.
In this garden, designed by Atelier de l'Ile, sections of bamboo stuck into the ground also remind us that seeds could be kept in the hollowed out wood of this plant during long expeditions.
